Excellent article. I can deal with criticism and even 'politics' but if it's endless with no celebration or a little ataboy now and then, it becomes toxic.

Exactly!
What's fascinating is how that changes as a society over time. I remember watching the original usability studies done by PARC, Apple, Microsoft and others when they first developed the mouse. Users had no idea what to do with it, sometimes picking it up into the air, other times being completely stumped when they came to the edge of the screen.

Now it seems like a 2 year old has innate ability to master the little rodent.

Great stuff again, Alex. Agree with your assessment that it doesn't refute DKE, but he does introduce other noise into the mix (regression to the mean, etc.) What is really missing is the signal to noise ratio. I'm not a big fan of articles that bring in other data and then can't quantify if it is significant or not, but at least he brings awareness to the fact that it is there. I hope someone will develop research to determine the relative contributions of each of the factors.

You're welcome! ;)
There's an interesting rebuttal to the DKE here - http://www.talyarkoni.org/blog/2010/07/07/what-the-dunning-kruger-effect-is-and-isnt/
While not a complete refutation, it tempers the conclusions somewhat. I found it interesting. Be sure to check out the comments, Dr. Kruger himself jumps into the conversation!
